Season of Holiday Home-Buying

It’s that time of year again. The snow is on the ground, decorations are being put up, and everyone is nestling up inside of their cozy Christmas home. But if you’re looking for a deal on a new home, are these activities you should be partaking in? Throughout the course of the year, there is always one day where new home shoppers have a distinct edge in the home-buying process. Would you like to guess which day ranks supreme? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not in the Spring!

For obvious reasons, most buyers wait till the spring sales season. The sun is out, the weather is peaceful, and people are comfortable touring neighborhoods and viewing models.

With increased foot traffic comes more offers from a larger number of consumers, leading to increasingly demand and possibly higher home prices.

Instead, try buying a home on Christmas Day. It’s the smartest move available to any new home shopper because almost no one else will do it! You get a bonus if you do research on the homes you’re interested beforehand. You’ll be better positioned to make an offer that matches your price range as well as the agent’s asking price. Why is Christmas Day so attractive?

  • People are in unnaturally good moods as they enjoy the festivities and spend time with family.
  • People are more inclined to show generosity during this time than any other point of the year.
  • The likelihood of having multiple buyers looking during the week of Christmas is relatively low, so the chances of seeing competitive offers or any competition whatsoever is even slimmer.
  • Home prices are at a 12-month low in December as home owners and agents attempt to unload inventory.
  • If a person or agent has a home on the market over Christmas, they are incredibly intent on selling that it. Why not take advantage of that by making an offer?

While a builder or agent won’t accept just any offer, Christmas and the end of December is a great time to get ahead of the crowds and secure a great deal on your new dream home.
