2022 Most Affordable Cities in Wyoming

Wyoming boasts the perfect mix of culture and nature. It is home to seven national parks and has some of the most panoramic scenery in the country. The state is perfect for everyone from first-time homeowners to retirees ready to settle down. 1.  Evanston

Evanston, the most affordable city in Wyoming, rises about 6,700 feet above sea level and is bathed in sunshine 300 days a year. This small town is surrounded by mountains and offers opportunities for camping, mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, and more. In addition, it has a quaint downtown area with many shops and tasty restaurants.

2.  Riverton

Average Property Tax: $1,066

Median Household Income: $52,463

Riverton is known for its rich Native American culture. It sits along the Yellowstone Highway and has easy access to the cities of Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. Furthermore, it is surrounded by several mountain ranges where you can engage in countless outdoor activities. Expect to be mesmerized by the windswept sandstone formations at Castle Gardens Petroglyph Site – they bear a striking resemblance to castles.

3.  Green River

Green River is the southwestern region of Wyoming and is famous for its world-class fishing. Its premier location makes it ideal for river rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, and more. The scenery in Green River is truly breathtaking and has an abundance of activities that will keep you entertained year-round. Additionally, Downtown Green River offers one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants. 

4.  Cheyenne

Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming and retains its Old Western spirit. In fact, it is considered the nation’s rodeo and railroad capital and offers many western-themed attractions. In Cheyenne, you will find historical museums, botanical gardens, and restaurants that will suit any taste. Some favorite local spots are Wyoming State Museum, Curt Gowdy State Park, and Cheyenne Botanic Gardens.

5.  Rock Springs

The city of Rock Springs is the fifth most populated city in Wyoming. It has a picturesque downtown area with an award-winning main street, lined with many shopping and restaurant opportunities. The Killpecker Sand Dunes are located a few miles north of Rock Springs and are home to the largest sand dunes in North America – and the second-largest in the world. Grab an AWD vehicle or ATV and spend the day cruising around the sand dunes and exploring the region’s geological past.

6.  Casper

Casper, the economical heart of Wyoming, is a hub of great places to explore. There are amazing landscapes in Casper such as North Platte River, Edness Kimball Wilkins State Park, Casper Mountain, and Fremont Canyon. Folks who are looking for a home where they can immerse themselves in the great outdoors will fall in love with Casper. This town also has many museums, a vibrant art and music scene, as well as local dining, and craft breweries and distilleries.

7.  Laramie

Laramie has the feeling of a small town, but still offers locals many unique recreational and educational things to do. It has museums as well as tasty local restaurants. If fishing is your game, you will delight in stock-filled Lake Hattie; rock climbers will think they are in paradise at the nearby 8,000-foot Vedauwoo granite oasis. The Library Sports Grille and Brewery, and Medicine Bow National Forest are a few of the best spots. Additionally, Laramie is home to the only university in Wyoming and has a rather spirited atmosphere.

8.  Sheridan

Average Property Tax: $1,301

Median Household Income: $54,278

Sheridan, Wyoming is rich in culture and history. It’s a place where you can learn what it was like to live like a cowboy, pioneer, or rancher. Dig into Sheridan’s past at the King’s Saddlery and Museum, Trail End State Historic Site, and the Historic Sheridan Inn – developed by Buffalo Bill Cody. In addition, there are also many opportunities to connect with nature, like at Bighorn National Forest or Shell Falls.

9.  Gillette

Median Household Income: $79,789

Gillette is in the northeastern region of Wyoming and has easy access to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Devils Tower National Monument. Since there is an abundance of indoor and outdoor activities in Gillette, you will always find something entertaining to do. Rockpile Museum, Campbell County Parks and Recreation, and Black Hills National Forest are just three places where you can spend hours on end.
