Whether you work from home every day or just like to have a specific space in your home that promotes productivity, it’s smart to include an office in your home design. Here are five home offices to help you get inspired, as well as tips and products to help you achieve similar looks.
A Geometric Focus
A trend that quasi-began with the postmodern movement that emphasized clean lines, the office space above uses geometric shapes and sharp lines to make a cohesive room. The asymmetrical shape of the bookshelf emphasizes the squares and rectangles that make up the overall structure, a design element the multicolored rug and modern papasan chairs also use.
The patterned furniture and textured walls can make this room feel hectic and busy; but the neutral colored bookshelf and simple desk help to calm the energy. If you have plain walls and want to hang up some art, go with non-flashy pieces that remind you to keep your focus.
Go for an Undersea Escape
One part undersea vibes, one part quirky-but-professional young adult; either way you read this room, it’s a cozy spot that encourages productivity. If you don’t need the five-drawer, imposing file cabinet, go with something a little smaller but still tasteful or a few catch-all basket shelves. Hang simple floating shelves over the desk to help you organize, or go for a solid bookshelf and hang up inspiring and fun quotes on the wall behind your desk.
Speaking of the desk, the room above opts for a simple but eye-catching option, and you should do the same. The furniture in this room is meant to be functional without cluttering, so choose a desk that will force you to minimize the chaos. And of course, don’t forget the comfortable office chair.
Finally, add pops of color! No one wants to work in a drab office all day. Grab some paint in a soft shade of blue and go to town on the walls; if you’re not one for painting, get some tasteful, fun curtains instead! Some brightly colored succulents will also do a lot to brighten up the space.
Minimalist & Neutral
The two offices we’ve looked at so far are pretty busy with the colors, so let’s calm things down a bit. This soothing grey office above is a great example of how simple colors can come together for a great effect. The dark grey walls add a dramatic flair to the room without being visually overwhelming, and the white and oak desk contrasts beautifully. The white floating shelves give you space to display knickknacks and store items. They, along with the wire bulletin board, keep your space from feeling cluttered or chaotic, even when you have a lot on your plate.
Whether you go with hanging lights or a floor lamp, arrange lighting around a comfy chair so you have a reading spot or extra seating for visitors. The white hardwood flooring might not be the most practical choice if you have pets or tots (or a particularly clumsy partner); it’ll get dirty pretty fast. Instead, go with an off-white rug that’s machine washable. If your floors are dark already, you might want to rethink the grey paint; go with something lighter, or consider just doing an accent wall instead of all walls in the room.
All Natural
Using natural materials is a popular trend that isn’t slowing down; what better place to utilize them than in the workplace? The all-white walls and floor make the wood elements really stand out here, but it’s certainly not a requirement. A classy wood and metal desk looks good in any room, especially when paired with a simple chair and bookshelf.
Similar to other home offices we’ve seen, floating shelves make an appearance. The metal clock balances out the wood elements, and the simple butterfly and dragonfly prints tie the room together. If possible, utilize natural light and a gorgeous view to really feel connected to nature while you work.
Make the Most of a Small Space
Although we’ve been showing entire rooms, don’t feel like you have to have a spare bedroom in order to create your home office; a small alcove or open stretch of wall will work just fine. An appropriately-sized desk, a simple or snazzy standing lamp, and a functional chair are all you need to carve out a work space.
Add some fun and quirky artwork and you’re good to go! Angling the desk outward, as shown above, will better demarcate the space and allow you to engage with people.
If you’re a Type-A person, you’ve probably been long planning your dream home office; and with your new home, that office space is within reach! What feature are you definitely looking for in a home office to help boost your productivity?
