While the term “she shed” has skyrocketed since State Farm’s commercial went viral, the concept of women having a place to escape from day-to-day responsibilities is nothing new. People who live alone are able to use their entire house as a retreat, but those with families and roommates might enjoy a specially designated space that’s entirely their own. That’s where the she shed comes into play.
What Exactly is a She Shed?
A she shed is a woman’s equivalent of a man cave: a space solely for a woman to use whenever and however she might want. While man caves are located in the home – often in the basement or attic – she sheds are tool sheds in backyards or elsewhere on the property that have been converted into usable rooms.
Some are fully functional with running water and air conditioning, others are gutted spaces converted into bare bones art or Pilates studios. Regardless, these trendy spaces are comfortable and welcoming and, most importantly, women-only.
What is the Purpose of a She Shed?
The activities dedicated to she sheds are as versatile as the women who own them. They’re quiet spaces to pursue hobbies, take a moment to reflect, or entertain guests. Cozy reading nooks, organized potting and garden sheds, and breezy music studios are just some of the spaces into which backyard sheds are being reinvented.
From poetry, writing, growing broccoli, any interest is appropriate for a she shed, so long as you’re passionate about it.
How much does a she shed cost?
When calculating the cost of a she shed, it’s going to come down to your specific needs and with what you’re starting.
First, do you have a shed that you can revamp? If so, you’ll be pricing out aesthetic and structural upgrades, like fresh paint and repairing damaged windows. Do you want a functional kitchenette for snacks and meals, or climate control to preserve paintings? Add the costs of plumbing and electricity to the list; if you’re no expert, it’s a good idea to hire one.
If you don’t have a shed in the backyard, the first step is deciding what size is best for you. Floor plans vary, so make your selection based on what you’ll be sending your time doing. Make sure there’s enough space for storage, adequate seating, and any tables you might want or need.
The final step (which also happens to be the most fun) will be decorating. Of course, prices vary wildly here, as well. You might be the type who wants brand new furniture and décor, or you might enjoy thrifting and perusing garage sales. The latter options are a great way to save money if you’re on a budget, and at the same time you’ll be adding unique character to your space. Whether you’re going for a modern look, rustic vibe, or something in between, be as choosy as you want when selecting pieces to decorate your she shed.
Make it Your Own
If you’re the kind of woman who needs to get away from it all, a she shed is a great investment, especially if there isn’t a place in the home that you can call your own. These private sanctuaries are a great place to recharge or focus on an important project, and continue to grow in popularity.
