Top 5 Farmers Markets and Farm Stands in Austin

With its milder winters, and even through the scorching summers, Austin offers residents the benefit of fresh, seasonal produce essentially year-round at its outstanding farmers’ markets and local farm stands.

We’ve put together a list of the top farmers’ markets in the city — there’s one for pretty much every part of town.

So, no matter where you decide to purchase a home, you’ll have access to a wide variety of locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products and more. And because it’s Austin, most markets also have plenty of live music to enjoy while you shop or enjoy a quick bite to eat.

Texas Farmers’ Market (Mueller and Lakeline locations)

The markets at Mueller (East Austin) and Lakeline Mall (North Austin) are open year-round, rain or shine, and are producer-only (farmers can sell only what they grow) markets. Both provide a festival atmosphere with plenty of music and fun events for kids.

The Mueller market, held Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is located at the old Browning Hangar in what is a still-expanding mixed-use community developed from the old Austin airport (you can still see the old control tower on Berkman Drive). It was voted Austin’s favorite market by the Austin Chronicle in 2014–16. The Lakeline market, held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is located in the Lakeline Mall parking lot.

SFC Farmers’ Markets (Downtown, Sunset Valley and The Triangle locations)

These markets, operated by the Sustainable Food Center, are producer-only too and offer a wide variety of produce and artisan foods as well as live music and interactive activities for the kids. They are all open year-round, rain or shine.

The Downtown market, held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., has been around since 2003 and remains one of the most popular markets in the city. It’s situated in Republic Square Park next to the new federal courthouse and includes a café under the Auction Oak and plenty of room to picnic.

The Sunset Valley market is held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tony Berger Center in South Austin and includes an artisan market with vendors selling arts, crafts, jewelry, ceramics and more. The Triangle market, held Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., is located at Triangle Park in the middle of the midtown mixed-use community of the same name.

HOPE Farmers’ Market (Downtown)

This market is located in downtown East Austin next to Plaza Saltillo at East 5th and Comal streets. Held Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the market is the longest-running one in East Austin and features weekly educational programming and community outreach in addition to a diverse selection of food, produce and artisanal vendors. It was voted Best Farmers’ Market by the Austin Chronicle for 2012 and 2013.

Barton Creek Farmers’ Market (Southwest Austin)

Southwest Austin residents can head to Barton Creek Mall on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to partake of the Barton Creek Farmers’ Market held in the mall parking lot. The market is open year-round, rain or shine, and offers live music every Saturday as well as a petting zoo for kids of all ages and plenty of local vendors.

Boggy Creek Farm Stand, Springdale Farm, Green Gate Farms (East Austin)

In addition to farmers’ markets, Austin has a time-honored tradition of locally owned farms that not only sell produce to local restaurants but also open their doors to the public.

Boggy Creek Farm, located in East Austin, includes one of the oldest structures still standing in the city, with the farmhouse dating to the 1840s. The current farm is a little more recent, dating to 1992, and offers seasonal produce and other homemade products. The farmstand is open September through July on a Wednesday through Thursday schedule from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. In August, the hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Springdale Farm, located on Springdale Road in East Austin, has a farm stand open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition, the farm also operates the nonprofit Springdale Center for Urban Agriculture, which focuses on helping children — and adults, too — become more connected to their food “from seed to fork.”

Green Gate Farms, which is in far East Austin, also operates a farm stand on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturdays at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The farm also offers an adult farm camp and classes, such as cheesemaking and beekeeping, as well as a Community Supported Agriculture membership program and the New Farm Institute for farm-based education for students of all ages.
